GREEN MOUNTAIN RESERVOIR is located in north central Colorado,in the Blue River Valley. Approx 70 miles west of Denver and 20 miles north of I-70. Built in 1943 as part of the Big Thompson Plan. Its primary purpose is to replace water that is being diverted to the front range. The spin-off effects is what attracts many visitors each year. WATER SPORTS and MOUNTAIN ACTIVITIES. To reach GMR take hwy 9 north out of Silverthorne approx 18 miles. Or go south on hwy 9 from Kremmling approx 10 miles. Highway 9 follows the east side of the water, while HEENEY Rd or county rd 30 travels the west side.
